Four Easy Steps to Expand to New Markets Now

Business ChartsIf you are already exporting, you have overcome many of the challenges.  With a little marketing help, you can expand to new markets.

1. Examine Complementary Markets

Where are you shipping now? It’s likely that similar conditions exist in other markets, indicating that your product or service could be successful there too. For example:

  • Most of the 58 percent of companies that ship to only one market, ship to either Canada or Mexico, taking advantage of North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) privileges.

  • For those companies, considering expansion to the other NAFTA partner or to the countries which recently entered into the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) might make a lot of sense.

  • If you export to the United Kingdom, expanding to Ireland or the Nordic countries will probably require little effort since regulatory requirements and business culture are very similar.

A useful source of market intelligence is the U.S. Commercial Service’s market and industry research written by our in-country trade professionals.

About 15 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, in the largest city on the West Coast, is MBDA’s Los Angles Business Center.

To meet the diverse needs of their clients, the Los Angeles MBDA Business Center staffs two offices. One office is located on the campus of the University of Southern California and allows clients to benefit from the resources of academia. While the second office, located at city hall in the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office of Economic and Business Policy, brings clients closer to the connections of local government and private industry. Their unique service model continues to yield tremendous results in providing the Los Angeles minority business community with valuable business resources including access to contracts and capital.

One of the highlights of the LA MBDA Business Center is its Annual Minority Business Award Program, which was recently held at City Hall. Beginning in 1995 and continuing every year since then, this year’s awards ceremony recognized industry leaders that play a role in building the economy through job creation.

Trade MissionJorge Lozano said he arrived in America from his native Bolivia when he was 10 years old with a suitcase full of clothes and pocket full of dreams. Today, 50 years later, Lozano is the President and CEO of Condortech Services, Inc., an integrated security solutions company that protects over $1.8 billion in assets in Washington, D.C.

In his 2013 State of the Union speech, President Obama outlined his vision for making America a magnet for investment, innovation, and economic growth. He said that if we are going to keep our economy growing, we need to ensure that opportunities to prosper are open to all the innovative risk-takers and entrepreneurs who are pursuing the American dream, especially our minority business entrepreneurs.

Lozano, a client of the Minority Business Development Agency’s (MBDA) Federal Procurement Center in Washington, D.C., took that risk and made his American dream come true—and he’s not done yet.

He recently accompanied former Acting Secretary of Commerce Rebecca Blank on an infrastructure business development trade mission to Brazil, Colombia, and Panama. The purpose of the trip was to promote U.S. exports by helping U.S. companies in infrastructure sectors make the connections they need to expand their business opportunities in the three countries.
