Throughout the years, the hospitality industry has grown through a series of transformations. While many industries struggled with unemployment in 2011, new growth in the hospitality industry sparked a boom in the number of jobs created and economic opportunities. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the leisure / hospitality sector was second only to health care in the number of jobs created in 2011.
One key reason for this growth has been the rise of the gaming industry across the United States. Today, many states have either legalized or begun the debate to legalize casinos in their state. What was once an industry isolated in Las Vegas, NV has now expanded in some form to 38 states. As a clear sign of this growth, in 2012, the Chicagoland area is now the third largest market by revenue according to the American Gaming Association.
This rise also creates a number of economic opportunities for firms in the technology, manufacturing, and services industries. According to the American Gaming Association, “direct economic output by the gaming equipment manufacturing and technology sector rose to $13.0 billion in 2012 — an all-time high and 5.7 percent increase compared to 2011 figures. Approximately 31,200 workers were directly employed in the sector during 2012, earning $2.3 billion in salaries and wages.”
Food and beverage firms as well as hotel management firms are also in line for expanding opportunities as these segments account for approximately one third of gaming revenue.

Acting Deputy Secretary Gallagher Advocates Increased U.S. Exports through Doing Business in Africa Campaign

Acting Deputy U.S. Commerce Secretary Patrick Gallagher delivered remarks at “From DC to Africa: Growing Local, Going Global,” a business forum hosted by the D.C. Office on African Affairs to raise awareness of opportunities for U.S. companies to do business in Africa. D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray also gave remarks at the forum and introduced Dr. Gallagher.
The event also marks the first anniversary of the launch of the Commerce Department’s Doing Business in Africa Campaign (DBIA) by then-Acting Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Last year, President Obama issued the U.S. Strategy Toward Sub-Saharan Africa and said the region is poised to be the world’s next greatest economic success story. In fact, sub-Saharan Africa is home to six of the ten fastest-growing economies in the world. U.S. exports to Africa currently top $21 billion a year, and enormous opportunities exist for more U.S. companies to export goods and services there. DBIA works to take advantage of those export and investment opportunities by encouraging more robust commercial engagement in sub-Saharan Africa.

The 2013 Rainbow PUSH Coalition & Citizen Education Fund Public Policy Institute & Media and Telecommunications Symposium was held Nov. 15 at the Capital Hilton Hotel in Washington, DC.
The annual event titled “The Future of Media: Policies, People and Players,” presented cutting edge information about racial diversity in the media landscape and how to think more broadly about media policy. It also covered recent strides in telecommunications and how to bridge the “digital divide.”
“The information shared during this symposium is necessary for all Americans to know, as we seek to change the tide to a multi-cultural, multi-racial progressive agenda,” said Martin King, Chairman, Rainbow PUSH Coalition. “We want those attending to go back to their communities and spread a message of hope and responsibility.”
Kimberly Marcus, Associate Director for the Office of Legislative, Education & Intergovernmental Affairs at the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), was one of the panelists in the “Tele-everything: Broadband and Remote Access to Energy, Health and the Economy,” session.
