It is with great pleasure that I write to invite you to attend the National MBE Manufacturers Summit 2016 at the Georgia Tech Global Learning Center in Atlanta, GA on March 24, 2016.

Now is a time of amazing innovation and change in the manufacturing industry. What will 2016 and beyond bring? Where is manufacturing headed? You’ll get answers to these questions and more at our premier manufacturing event of 2016 presented by the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) Business Center Network.

The day will commence with opening remarks by Georgia Tech President G.P. Peterson, MBDA National Director Alejandra Castillo, and Derek Kayonga, co-founder of The Global Soap Project and CEO of the Center for Civil and Human Rights.   We will continue with corporate and MBE manufacturer panels, breakout sessions on key industry topics including manufacturing in healthcare and cybersecurity, Business-to-Business Matchmaking and Fast Pitching one-on-one meetings with corporations. These sessions will allow you to share your capabilities with sourcing professionals and potential customers and to connect with other manufacturers for potential partnering opportunities. In addition, ample time will be given for Networking Breaks, Poster Walk opportunities and more!

Minority BusinessesMinority businesses are playing an integral part in keeping the ‘Made in America’ product strong as the U.S. manufacturing sector continues to rise.  Minority-owned manufacturing firms employ 342,000 workers and have recently grown faster than their non-minority counterparts in three areas—number of firms, employees and gross receipts.

MBDA’s increased focus on manufacturers over the past few years is producing results. Just in the last three years, MBDA has facilitated more than $3.3 billion in contracts for minority-owned manufacturing firms, making manufacturing one of the top industries for MBDA clients.

Facts about ManufacturingAll over the country, manufacturing companies and other organizations are preparing to host an anticipated 400,000 people who want to experience American manufacturing up close and in person. On October 2, 2015, the fourth annual Manufacturing Day (MFG Day) will simultaneously increase public awareness about what and where manufacturing is, provide some with a pathway toward a new career, and demonstrate manufacturing’s value to the United States’ economy.

Manufacturing Day is a big, national to-do. And it should be. In 2014, manufacturing accounted for 12.3 percent of the Gross Domestic Product, supported 17.4 million jobs and contributed $2.1 trillion to the economy.

Manufacturing Day is also group effort. At its core is a team of co-producers made up of the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP), the Fabricators and Manufacturers Association International, the National Association of Manufacturers, the Manufacturing Institute, guest producer Industrial Strength Marketing, media partners Science Channel and EdgeFactor, and movie partner American Made Movie. Together they are leading the charge to organize towns, cities and states to amplify the promise of Manufacturing Day’s mission. The goal is to challenge outdated perceptions and address workforce recruitment concerns by presenting manufacturing in a straight-forward (yet ultimately flattering) light. Manufacturers are prepping, primping, polishing and getting ready to show off what they have to offer.

This year, Manufacturing Extension Partnership Program (MEP) celebrates its 25th anniversary. In anticipation of this milestone, we reflect on events of the last two and a half decades that significantly impacted the global economy, manufacturing, and the Manufacturing Extension Partnership.

MEP has taken its cues from the lessons of global opportunities and challenges, and the daily changes of our client base. The program's value and effectiveness will be measured in the impact of our services and the evolving tide of progress and growth of our clients

Dollar Bill and FinanceThis post originally appeared on the NIST MEP Blog

Stretching your businesses working capital through various types of short-term debt instruments can be a good solution to finding the cash to fund revenue-generating marketing programs or help your company manage when clients don’t pay bills on time. Some of these short-term debt products may be particularly useful to business owners who may be discouraged by current bank lending practices.  Manufacturing companies are increasingly using a product, commonly referred to as Asset Based lending as an alternative to bank loans.

U.S. Minority-Owned ManufacturersIn the first of a series of new industry-based fact sheets released by MBDA, data reveals that minority-owned manufacturing firms employ 342,000 workers and grew faster than their non-minority counterparts in three areas—number of firms, employees and gross receipts.

This data supports MBDA’s increased focus on manufacturers over the past few years and we’ve seen results. Between FY 2009 and 2013, MBDA facilitated $2.8 billion in contracts for minority-owned manufacturing firms.  For the past two years, MBDA manufacturing clients have shown significant growth, becoming the top category for contracting revenue, a designation traditionally reserved for MBDA clients in the construction industry.

In an effort to continue this upward trend, MBDA awarded supplemental funding to four MBDA Business Centers to better assist clients in advanced manufacturing. Their specialty expertise will have a national scope while centrally located in Atlanta, Detroit, Indianapolis, and Cleveland – cities with a high population of minority-owned manufacturers.

Steel ManufacturingToday is Manufacturing Day and it deserves special attention this year. Manufacturing drives economic recovery and for the first time in more than 10 years, manufacturing output and employment are growing. Manufacturing employment has grown faster than it has in decades, with more than 700,000 new jobs since February 2010; as a whole supporting more than 17 million U.S. jobs.  The manufacturing industry also boasts some of the best paying jobs, with the average worker earning $77,000 per year.

Manufacturing plants are not all dirt and grime as portrayed in movies. Robotics and advanced manufacturing have changed the industry significantly with manufacturing plants looking more like sci-fi movies sets than traditional plants. In celebration of Manufacturing Day check out one of over 1,500 open houses, public tours, career workshops, and other events being hosted nationwide. Firms like Alcoa, Applied Robotics, General Electric, and Bausch and Lomb are opening their doors to the public today so they can see how the industry has changed over the years.
