About this Center

New York StateThe NY-Manhattan MBDA Business Center is a business development consulting firm managed by the National Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC). The center is committed to augmenting economic parity in performance between minority and non-minority companies. The center utilizes strategic partnerships and the diverse business and professional backgrounds of its principals to improve minority-owned companies’ performance and profitability.

NYCMBC utilizes strategic partnerships and the diverse business and professional backgrounds of its principals to improve minority-owned companies’ performance and profitability. The center is part of a family of business services managed by the National Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC).

NCRC is an association of more than 600 community-based organizations that promotes access to basic banking services including credit and savings, to create and sustain affordable housing, job development and vibrant communities for America’s working families. It is the only non-profit in the country that operates three U.S. Department of Commerce Minority Business Centers (located in New York City, Washington, DC and Houston), as well as a small business teaming program, an SBA Women’s Business Center and a community development small- and micro-business fund.

Funded in part by the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) of the U.S. Department of Commerce, the business center provides management and business consulting assistance to minority business enterprises throughout the NY/NJ region. Download Center Flyer.

Performance Overview

In FY2011, MBDA helped New York minority-owned businesses obtain 55 contracts totaling $66,859,905 and $141,152,901 in capital through eight financial transactions.

For clients with gross annual revenues of $500,000 or more, MBDA Business Centers completed 61 transactions totaling $182,669,905. For clients with annual gross revenues below $500,000, MBDA Business Centers completed two transactions totaling $25,342,901.

MBDA assisted New York minority-owned businesses in creating 197 new jobs in FY2011.

Staff Information

Suzette C. Bather, Director – NYC MBDA Business Center

Suzette C. Bather has over 15 years of professional and leadership experience in entrepreneurship, social work, finance, and supplier diversity.  Currently, she serves as the director for the NY-Manhattan MBDA Business Center.  Funded in part by the US Department of Commerce, the center is a business development consulting agency committed to developing high-earning minority business enterprises.  During her short time as director, the NYMBC has exceeded performance goals of $84.1 million in contracts and capital awarded to diverse businesses.

Prior to taking on the director role in May 2011, Ms. Bather honed her professionalism and relatable personality during her 8 years of work at JP Morgan Chase across multiple roles.  In Global Procurement Supplier Diversity, she developed statistical reports to track diverse business activities and helped develop a virtual trade show to match procurement officers with suppliers, helping the firm surpass its diversity spend goals.  In Small Business Finance, Ms. Bather created sales tactics and trained national sales force on execution techniques and developed and implemented an expense management tool which resulted in $22 million savings.  In Treasury Security Services, Ms. Bather designed models utilizing applications to automate reports of actual revenue versus plan, utilized by senior management for decision making purposes, and created and implemented a global product hierarchy for the cash concentration functionality.

Suzette C. Bather holds a BA in Psychology from Binghamton University, an MBA in Finance and Strategy from Pace University, and an Executive Management Certification from Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.
