Direct Line: Waves and Windfall: The Ocean Economy of Mauritius
Topic: Waves and Windfall: The Ocean Economy of Mauritius
Host: Ambassador Shari Villarosa
Date, time, time zone for call: Tuesday, August 19, 2014; 9:00 a.m. EDT (17:00 local)
Brief Description of Call: Despite its small land area, Mauritius controls an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of more than 2 million square kilometers in the western Indian Ocean, one of the largest EEZs in the world. While the region has been well-traveled for centuries, the ocean’s economic potential remains mostly unexplored. In December 2013, the Board of Investment (BOI), the Mauritian investment promotion agency, published the Ocean Economy Roadmap (http://www.oceaneconomy.mu/PDF/Brochure.pdf), which lays out short- and long-term development targets for ocean-related industries such as hydrocarbon and mineral exploration, fishing and seafood processing, deep ocean water applications, marine services, seaport activities, marine renewable energy, and ocean research – areas in which U.S. businesses already have great experience and expertise.
But where are the best opportunities for U.S. businesses in this emerging Ocean Economy? We’ll hear a presentation from the Board of Investment on how they see these sectors developing in the near future and entertain lively discussion between BOI, Ambassador Villarosa, and our participants in the U.S. Please join Ambassador Villarosa for the Direct Line event Waves and Windfall: The Ocean Economy of Mauritius.
Deadline for RSVPs: Monday, August 11, 2014
