    David Hinson AS DELIVERED
    Tuesday, June 4, 2013

Thank you, Mr. President, for your kind introduction.

I bring you greetings and heart-felt congratulations from President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and the entire Obama Administration for the great work that you have done here today.

I am delighted to be here with you today.

And I want to thank members of the faculty, the family members and friends of the graduates, and especially the delighted and in some instances relieved parents, for all the work that you did in helping to get these talented young men and young women to their graduation!

Please join me in giving your parents, faculty, family and friends a warm round of applause.

I also want to offer very special congratulations to your valedictorian Dany Salas, and your salutatorian Jessica Castillo.

When President Hotzler invited me as your commencement speaker, my first thought was how one should prepare to address some of the best and brightest graduates in mathematics, engineering and business, among other fields, that our nation has to offer?

I was not sure what to do. So, to prepare, I went sky diving!

Yes, I want you to know that I jumped out of a perfectly good airplane for all of you!  If that is not commitment, I am not sure what is!

Thanks you for the kind introduction. I am delighted to be here with you at this business and innovation conference and it is always a good day when you can follow your boss at the podium.

I have had the occasion to work with Dr. Blank for several years now as she guided the Department of Commerce and I can say first hand that she is one of our nation’s finest leaders. Dr. Blank, thank you for your great work and great leadership. Please join me in giving her another round of applause!

I also want to echo, the thank you to both Senior Vice Chancellor Hershenson and to Congressman Rangel for their tremendous service to the people of New York and to our Nation. And I would be remiss if I did not recognize those from this district and from the City of New York who lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as those who served in the military defending our freedoms and our opportunities.

    Good Afternoon

Thank you for the kind introduction.

When the Minority Business Development Agency was established over 40 years ago, its mandate was to build the wealth and capacity of minority owned firms, in support of U.S. job growth. As we just witnessed the second inauguration of our first African-American president, Barack Obama, the state of U.S. minority business enterprises (MBEs) has greatly improved, but there is still a lot of work to be done.

But while there is still more work, under the Obama Administration, there is increasing evidence the American economy is moving forward again following the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. Minority-owned businesses have a critical role to play in maintaining the momentum. MBDA has a 40 year history of promoting the growth and competitiveness of large, medium and small minority-owned enterprises (MBEs).

    Good afternoon,

Thank you for your kind introduction. On behalf of President Barack Obama and Acting Secretary Rebecca Blank, I am delighted to be with you this afternoon. The Minority Business Roundtable is an invaluable asset for this nation’s nearly 6 million minority-owned businesses.

The efforts undertaken by Roger and his team to ensure that these businesses are engaged in the policy arena has truly helped them have a hand in their own competitiveness. Nearly four years into the Obama Administration there is increasing evidence the American economy is moving forward again.
