The Minority Business Development Agency pays tribute to the rich ancestry and traditions of Native Americans as we approach the final days of Native American Heritage Month.  According to the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs, “What started at the turn of the century as an effort to gain a day of recognition for the significant contributions the first Americans made to the establishment and growth of the U.S., has resulted in a whole month being designated for that purpose.”

The contributions of Native Americans continue to positively impact the country.  In recent years, the U.S. Census Bureau has reported that American Indian & Alaska Native-owned firms generate $34.4 billion in economic output to the U.S. Economy.  MBDA is proud to be a part of the growth of Native American firms.  During a 3-year period, starting in 2008, MBDA has assisted 1,983 Native American-owned firms in obtaining $1.1 billion in contracts and capital.  In 2011 alone, MBDA Business Centers provided assistance to Native American businesses that resulted in $536 million in contracts and capital.

As we look ahead, MBDA will continue to invest in Indian Country to support job creation and economic development through the operation of MBDA Business Centers in states with large American Indian populations.  In honor of Native American Heritage Month, we salute the First Americans and their rich heritage that continues to provide historical perspective and unique opportunities through cultural diversity that will aid in achieving a brighter future for all Americans.
