In commemoration of the 2015 National Women’s History Month, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) hosted a “Meet the Author” event inside Commerce’s Research Library on April 8.

The guest speaker for the event was Dr. Andrea E. Smith-Hunter, a Professor of Management and Sociology at Siena College and author of several books.  Dr. Smith-Hunter spoke to Commerce employees about her research and latest publication  titled “Women Entrepreneurs in the Global Marketplace,” a topic that resonates with this year’s national theme of “Weaving the Stories of Women’s Lives.”

Dr. Smith-Hunter spoke about her journey to the many countries she visited and the support she received from the women who served as the subjects. Her research focused on several socio-economic factors including industries of practice, reasons for becoming a business owner, and how the business was started.

Dr. Smith-Hunter also focused her research on the most prevalent challenges the women faced and conquered in launching their business. When asked by the audience what motivated her to write the book, she said “To assist young entrepreneurs and help them seek opportunities that will lead to social and financial independence.”
